What do I need to get a U.S. passport?
- Passport application ( print one out from State Department site )
- Proof of identity
- A valid driver's license, a previous U.S. passport, a Certificate of Naturalization or Citizenship, government or military ID, or corporate ID.
- Birth certificate [ order U.S. birth certificates online ]
- If you were born in the U.S., a certified copy of your birth certificate issued by the state, city, or county of your birth (a certified copy will have a registrar's raised, embossed, impressed, or even multicolored seal and the date the certificate was filed with the registrar's office).
- Were you born overseas? If so, get one of the following:
- Certificate of Naturalization
- Certificate of Citizenship
- Report of Birth Abroad of a U.S. Citizen
- Certification of Birth (Form FS-545 or DS-1350).
- Two identical, standard passport photographs (2x2 inches in size)
- The photographs must have been taken within the past six months. Places like Wal-Mart or Kinko's can do them at reasonable prices.
- The photographs must be clear with a full front view of your face and taken on a light (white or off-white) background. Photographs may be in color or black and white. Photographs must be taken in normal street attire, showing you without head-covering. Dark glasses may not be worn in passport photographs unless a doctor's statement is submitted supporting the wearing of dark glasses for medical reasons.
- $75 fee plus $25 in processing costs.

The first thing to do when you get a passport . . .
As soon as you receive your new passport, make one or more photocopies of the information pages with your photo and personal data. Take that photocopy with you when you travel, but keep it separate from the passport. If you lose your passport, this photocopy will ease the process of getting a replacement.
