Nancey Murphy Lecture Highlights 2005
WPS Meeting. Nancey Murphy's (Fuller Theological Seminary) banquet address became the highlight of the 2005 meeting. Murphy argued for an understanding of the person she calls "non-reductive physicalism." She said that this understanding offers a more adequate conception of personhood than traditional mind-body dualism. The idea of human soul is a Greek philosophical notion not supported by the Bible or contemporary science, said Murphy. If Christians throughout the centuries had not been so concerned about saving these souls for the afterlife, they may have concerned themselves more with Jesus' teaching about the real, present, and realizable kingdom of God on earth. To commence the annual meeting, society vice-president Eric Manchester (Clifford College) and member Thomas Jay Oord (Northwest Nazarene University) joined SSPWT members for a panel discussion of monism. Later in the meeting, Barry Bryant (Memphis Theological Seminary) offered his presidential address on Thomas Jefferson's social philosophy and politics, Paper presenters at the meeting included Kenneth Himma (Seattle Pacific University), whose invited paper addressed teleological arguments from the Intelligent Design movement. Drawing from Thomas Aquinas's insights, Craig Boyd (Greenville College) outlined a position on natural law and religious experience. Other paper presenters included Peter McGuire, Andrew Nam, Sean Riley, John Culp, and Jonathan Sands. At its business meeting, the society elected Bryan Williams (Warner Pacific University) its 2nd vice-president. Website manager Brint Montgomery (Southern Nazarene University) reported on future plans for the website. By the conclusion of the weekend, treasurer Rob Thompson (Northwest Nazarene University) formally combined WPS financial accounts with SSPWT accounts. This combining further solidifies the close relationships of the societies. |
